So, has anyone heard about why Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans? Apparently because it was a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Never mind the lack of personal direction it takes for storm systems to form, never mind the fact that New Orleans was built in an area below sea level WAY before all that terrible sin came to it, never mind that thousands of children and adults who were never in N.O. lost their lives and homes in the resultant destruction, it just had to be the action of an angry and spiteful God. Well, if that's the case, then God has terrible aim, and a terrible sense of justice. These inane comments have been made by many pastors and preachers from all across America. Rabbi Yehuda Levin of Jews For Morality states that the hurricane is a punishment for AMericas immorality and sin. The Maine Christian Civic League said it was more than coincidental that Katrina struck N.O. because there was going to be a gay pride parade in the city. The group Repent America made the same basic comments.
I dare any Christian apologist to justify these comments in light of the belief in a kind and loving deity. These people in no way, shape or form believe in a kind and loving God. What they don't even understand is that there was no large amount of gays and lesbians in the city. When God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gommorah, he made sure the sinful people were actually there in the city TO BE DESTROYED. But of course the hurricane struck before the event, making sure that the poor and their children were hit by the storm and not the gays.
The entire idea of divine retribution falls apart right there. The idea of impersonal nature comes clearer with this realization. So, can everyone put down their pointing fingers now and be of use to people who are suffering?
